Some customers have been experiencing an "Error Communicating with engine" error when attempting to open a library. This error is caused by the new (as of Oct 2017) "Controlled folder access" feature of Windows Defender. If "Controlled folder access" is ON, Defender will deny Digital Diamond Baseball access to your Documents folder. To see if this is a problem on your machine, follow these steps:

  • Type "Windows Defender Settings" in the search bar next to the start menu.
  • Click on “Windows Defender Settings”
  • Click on "Open Windows Defender Security Center”.
  • Click on "Virus & Threat Protection".
  • Click on "Virus & Threat Protection Settings".
  • Scroll down and see if "Controlled folder access” is turned ON. If it is, then this is the cause of the error. See the image below for a screen shot.

You can fix this either by turning "Controlled folder access" OFF. Or you can follow these steps to add an exception for Digital Diamond Baseball to access your Documents folder:

  • Click on "Allow an app through Controlled folder access".
  • Click on Add an allowed app"
  • Browse to the following file: This PC->Local Disk (C:)->Program Files (x86)->Digital Diamond Baseball V6->jre8->bin->javaw
  • Select the file and click on Open.

NOTE: this fix does not allow all javaw programs to access your Documents folder. It only grants permission to the version of javaw used by DDBB.
